There’s a reason people joke that Canggu is “New Moscow.” Australians come to Bali for a surf and wake up with a new tattoo after post-surf drinks. Americans arrive for a life reset, accidentally start a podcast, and adopt a dog. And Russians? Russians, as always, mean business. They are here to build infrastructure. Networks. Standards.

Hear me out.
Russians in Bali have a reputation for being terrible customers. Picky. Unimpressed. Quick to point out what’s wrong. High-maintenance in the way that makes hospitality staff nervous. But when those same customers become business owners, something interesting happens. What reads as “difficult” on the consumer side translates into operational precision on the ownership side. The same exacting eye that notices flaws in service becomes the eye that eliminates them. And nowhere is that more visible than at TOPGYM Canggu — the Russian-owned gym that has become both a fitness space and a community hub. Exactly what the other hundred new gyms in Bali are trying to engineer.
What works

The lockers are oversized and surprisingly well organized. The beauty room feels closer to editorial backstage than to a standard gym bathroom. There’s a designated space for coats and helmets — because this is Bali, and functionality matters — and outside sits an actual helmet-cleaning machine. Perfect. My helmet is always filthy. Speaking of bikes. I had to smile. Leopard print, neon pink, iridescent shades of bikes, and of course all are XMax. There’s real commitment to the aesthetic. Russians don’t do halfways. And then there are a bunch of details you don’t usually notice, but here it’s so well organized that you do. For example, the sauna overlooks the Canggu skyline instead of a concrete wall. Water here comes with cucumber and pink salt for optimized hydration. Tiny details, but they made me feel good.
Female standards as culture
What stood out most, however, and I’m mildly ashamed to admit it, was the women. TOPGYM Canggu might have the highest concentration of the hottest women in Bali. Maintained hot. Luxury hot. Polished, deliberate, very well looked after. I was part intimidated, part inspired to pull myself together.

In much of Western wellness culture, we romanticize “effortless.” Russian culture never really subscribed to that fantasy. Effort isn’t embarrassing. Maintenance isn’t shallow. Presentation reads as discipline and self-respect. I can get behind that. After a couple of weeks, I stopped walking into Top Gym looking casual. I made more effort. Almost like I was heading on a date. I straightened up and became more aware of myself.
Intimidation vs. reality

This was the part I was most nervous about. Russians don’t exactly have a global reputation for spontaneous warmth. You don’t expect high-fives and oversharing in the locker room. The famous Russian reserve was very much present. It was all focused expressions, selective conversations, pouty lips and very little of the hyper-performative friendliness Bali wellness spaces are known for. At first I did genuinely wonder if I had accidentally enrolled in a discipline experiment. But after a while the temperature shifted. It’s like they needed time to verify me.Trainers were engaged, attentive and professional. Even members started to talk with me, first to help me translate the instructions at the classes (yes, it’s all in russian), and then to my surprise phone numbers were exchanged. Plans are made. I got in! No one is trying to be your best friend on day one. But once you make friends, it’s solid. And actually I found that refreshing.
The unexpected truth about the classes

Given the cultural emphasis on discipline, I expected punishing military workouts. Instead, most classes at TOPGYM are accessible, even light. Out of everything tested, only the TRX and hips stretch sessions edged into genuinely challenging territory. The majority felt sustainable rather than extreme. Which, in hindsight, makes sense. Unlike crossfit, which implies going all out to the point of burnout, the culture here is built around dignified maintenance. You don’t need to destroy yourself if you plan on showing up again tomorrow.
My verdict
Many gyms in Canggu sell atmosphere. TOPGYM sells standards, and access to a real, functioning community. The kind where people know each other’s names, businesses, Telegram handles. Where you come to make business deals, as well as abs. Top Gym doesn’t attempt to impress you through spectacle or hype. It simply operates at a level that assumes you will either adjust to the standard or decide it’s not for you. And for women who understand that discipline can be a form of power, that distinction works.
